Greatest Minds Nightlife Thoughts

July 29th, 2008 by Cabral Thomas

Despite having a 9 o’clock bball game to play last night, I made sure to attend the Greatest Minds Nightlife Forum at the NBCA office. It got off to a late start (6:45) but the energy in the room was palpable. It was truly a who’s who of the Boston nightlife and event scene with just about every top promoter in the house. A lot of issues were touched on, including the

  • desire or lack thereof by club management to have Hip Hop nights that cater to us
  • lack of diversity and venue
  • lack of collaboration and mind-sharing
  • not supporting poetry nights and other nightlife alternatives
  • violence and the infamous “Let Out”

Unfortunately, I had to leave around 8:15pm so I don’t know what the official next steps are but there was talk of a collaborative forming, which makes perfect sense since we all mostly know each other already.

On a related note, I received an email today that First Fridays United’s event has changed location from Johnnie’s On the Side to Whiskey Park. I’ll bet my shoe collection that the move has EVERYTHING to do with what happened Sunday morning. Is it right that JotS *probably* told FFU “I know we have a contract, but sorry we can’t you can’t be here Friday night”? No, but I can see their point of view - better to break contract than have a negative spotlight on your place of business.
